Scaling & Root Planing

The ultrasonic scaling device removes tartar (calculus), plaque and biofilm from the tooth surface and underneath the gum line. This ensures your teeth and gums remain healthy. Deep scaling involves detailed cleaning of the root surface to decrease inflammation of the gum tissue.

Why do I need this?

Gum assessments are done at your initial dental exam and regular check-ups and cleanings. If your gum health seems to be deteriorating and you have gum disease, we recommend scaling and root planing, also known as deep cleaning, for your teeth. This procedure allows us to restore your gums to a healthy state.

Patient Expectations

Scaling and root planing may be completed in one or more sittings with each appointment ranging from 30 to 45 minutes. At each appointment, you will be given anesthesia to numb the tissue, followed by scaling done by an ultrasonic device / cavitron. Finally, root planing will be done manually using handheld devices.

The results of deep cleaning are only achieved if followed by periodontal maintenance treatments every 3 months for up to a year.
