Periodontal Therapy

One must make sure to have regular tooth and gum cleaning at the dental office every 6 months. Sometimes it may take some more effort to make your gums healthy and disease free.

Periodontal therapy includes a variety of specific gum related treatments. The most common is flap surgery. These procedures entail folding back the gum tissue, removing the disease-causing bacteria and smoothening any irregular bone surfaces to limit areas where bacteria can hide. Tissue is then sutured in place, reducing pocket depth and allowing greater access for at-home oral hygiene. Gum tissue will reattach to the clean, healthy bone.

Why do I need this?

If the tissue or bone surrounding your teeth is too damaged to be repaired with non-surgical treatment, several surgical procedures are available to prevent severe damage and restore a healthy smile. We will recommend the procedure that is best suited to the condition of your teeth and gums. You may need periodontal therapy if:

  • You feel your gums are too loose

  • Food often accumulates between your teeth and gums

  • Gums bleed in spite of oral hygiene measures

  • Any yellow smelly liquid discharges from the gums

  • Gums are painful and sore

Patient Expectations

Be sure to make your dentist aware of any underlying medical condition you may have. A lot of periodontal issues exacerbate due to changes in hormones during puberty and pregnancy. Gum disease is also common in patients with diabetes, bleeding disorders, immune suppression and certain medications.

Patients are made very comfortable during periodontal therapy procedures with the use of local anesthetic. Once the periodontal disease is under control through periodontal surgery, the next step is maintenance care; a personalized program of care to keep your gums healthy. Your commitment to health, in partnership with our gum specialist, will help you obtain the best results from gum surgery and prevent deterioration of your periodontal health.
